Bye for now

Time to say good-bye to Iceland. We will visit you again. Next time, we would like to visit the east coast which we have not covered.

Akranes light house

Last minutes sightseeing at Akranes before heading off to Keflavik airport.

Akranes Youth Hostel

Day 9. Time to go home. Like others in Iceland, Youth Hostel in Akranes is clean and well organized. Nothing's to complain.

Akranes

After check in at Akranes Youth Hostel, went out for dinner at a local Icelandic restaurant which was recommended by a lady at reception. It is not a most fancy one but the taste was great. Besides, we tried Stout beer by a brewery in Akureyri. This company is producing Viking brand beer which I also recommend for their pilsner products.

Sugar charge

After driving rough road, we had a break to charge sugar. It turned out much more sugar than we had expected but we felt satisfied and fatigue's gone.
BTW, our car got dirt and mud. The backside windshield was almost blocked by them without using the washer. However, no scratches or dents so far.

Drive to Akanes

About 400km drive in Westfjrods and to Arkanes. When driving the south coast line of Westfjords, about half of the mileage was gravel road. Construction works for renovating the road was ongoing and the condition of the road was partly bad and rugged.

Ghost sip?

Ghost ship in Iceland? No, according to the explanation, this boat came from Norway and it is the oldest iron ship in Iceland.

Cliff again

Day 8. We woke up 5.00 and drove to the cliff again to take pictures of birds in morning sunlight. Some already had left their nests and we say fewer birds than yesterday but some other were still staying on the cliff. Happy to see you guys again!

Dusk, well sort of

The sun is rarely hidden behind the horizon in latitude 66 degree.

Breiðavík

Breiðavík is a piece-full place and it is easy access to the cliff (about 10km). I wished staying there even one more night.

And happy face

He seems also pretty much happy after the excursion to the cliff and good food.

Extremely happy lady

You could image how pleased she is after watching many birds in such a short distance so that you could almost touch them!

Get close to them

You can get very close to puffins at the cliff because it is forbidden to catch birds at the cliff and they are not afraid of human. No catching net here.

Sometime impressed

I am sometime impressed with my wife's pictures. I think this is a very unique angle.

Birds and more birds

Found lots of birds who were sitting around their nests, walking, swimming and flying. Guillemots, seagulls, razorbills and puffins. Since we missed them in Runde island last summer, it had been our wish to see puffins. It was rewarded to take an early summer vacation and drive far off to the most western part of Europe.

At the edge of the cliff

At the edge of the cliff, in order to take the best pictures you need to take those positions. It was a little bit scared first but we got used to.

Látrabjarg cliff

After check in at Breiðavík Hotel, arrived at the cliff which we had been long wanting to visit. Hoping to see birds, puffins.

Approaching Látrabjarg

Approaching Látrabjarg. There was some kind of museum but we skipped to rush to the cliff and birds.

Dynjandifoss

Used to see waterfalls but the shape of this waterfall is unique and I think worth visiting.

Another view to a fjord

Day 7. Drove to Latrabjarg, a well-known bird cliff. On the way to the cliff, we took a side road which guided us to the top of the hill. The road was rugged with a very steep slope. Grand Vitra worked perfectly.

Birds in Vigur

Probably a species of sandpiper
, guillemot, arctic tern and its flying form and arctic puffin. (from top to bottom)

Back to Ísafjörðu and stayed at Edda hotel. By the way, that hotel seems like being used as school dormitory except for summer season and you can experience back in old school dormitory life. For me? I would choose Youth Hostel if it is in Iceland.

Puffin catcher!

Please don't use that net! But puffins are important source for protein for Icelanders.

Vigur island

Vigur island is privately owned by local farmers. It is a very small island but famous with its variety of birds life.

Tour boat to Vigur

We could meet in time for the tour boat to Vigur. I became a camera boy for Icelandic ladies.
